Lamia Joreige

Uncertain Times: a reflection on historical processes, and on notions of temporality

Lamia Joreige's exhibition Uncertain Times explores the social, political, and geographic transformation of the region between the end of the Ottoman Empire and the beginning of the French and English mandate in Lebanon, Syria, and Palestine from 1914-1920. Through her research, writing, and production of mixed media artworks, Joreige reflects on historical processes and notions of temporality, inviting viewers to consider the impact of events that continue to shape our lives today, such as the Sykes-Picot Agreement, the Balfour Declaration, and the famine of Mount Lebanon.

For the first presentation of Uncertain Times - Mapping a Transformation at the Istanbul Biennial in September 2022, -scope Ateliers collaborated with Lamia Joreige to assemble the various elements of the exhibition, including archival photographs, documents, drawings, and personal texts, thus creating visual and textual correspondences.
